Suit against Toyota settled

Toyota lawsuit settled for patent infringement

Under threat of U.S. imports of hybrids being blocked, Toyota has settled a long-running patent infringement suit. In 1994, a patent covering “high voltage method to power gas-electric hybrid cars” was filed away. Toyota has agreed to license the technology from the Paice business.

The patent

The patent involves two motors giving torque to wheels. It became a patent in 1994 by Paice which was developed by Alex Severinsky. Hybrids generally used high voltage and low current in them.

Arguments about economy figured out

Though Toyota agreed that its technology may have infringed on the Paice patent, but the company had a case because of the International Trade Commission. ”Health and public policy issues” are the only thing the ITC can’t block concerning imports. The economy would are hurt if Toyota imports had been blocked.

Settled lawsuit

For six years Toyota has been in this suit against Paice. Toyota and Paice say what goes in Toyota cars is “equivalent to the Paice patent.” The invention, design and developing the technology is argued, by Toyota, to be a task of its own. If the litigation had not been settled in both Texas and U.S. appeals court, Toyota may are blocked from importing hybrids into the United States. Neither side has revealed details of the settlement.

Paice licensed by Ford

Ford, which is aiming to release both electric and hybrid vehicles, has licensed Paice’s technology. The Toyota lawsuit can be unaffected by this agreement. Paice patented technology will be used within the Fusion hybrid car, as well as others.
